Flattened rice, commonly known as Poha or Avalakki, (also called beaten rice) is a rice which is flattened into flat light dry flakes. These flakes of rice swell when added to liquid, whether hot or cold, as they absorb water, milk or any other liquids.
Traditionally Avalakki was consumed when consuming Rice was forbidden during certain religious days. This led to Sankethis coming up with a variety of dishes which traditionally used rice, but which were substituted with Avalakki.
Avalakki has a lot of health benefits which makes it a versatile and healthy breakfast grain. Since Poha/Rice Flakes are gluten free, it can be consumed by those allergic to wheat products. It is also a good source of iron, vitamin B.
