Upma Varieties


No discussion about Indian breakfast recipes would be complete without discussing Upma. Upma, uppumavu or uppittu is a dish from the Indian subcontinent, most common in South Indian, Maharashtrian households; cooked as a thick porridge from dry roasted semolina or coarse rice flour. Various seasonings and/or vegetables are often added during the cooking, depending on individual preferences. Today it is popular in most parts of India and is prepared in various ways. It even made news internationally a few years ago, when celebrity chef Floyd Cardoz won a $100,000 prize at the Top Chef Masters contest in Los Angeles by whipping up an upma with mushroom!
